‘All those silly things – do them’: Guruzeta’s path from injury table to success with Athletic

Whenhe initial occasion the Athletic striker competed in English soil, an 18-year-old representing Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he found the net. During his subsequent match he took the field in England, against the English side two months later, he scored. His third outing, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, sure enough, he scored again. As he revisited to Manchester to face United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he scored again. It was a superb volley, also. “Actually,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did their duty: they took him off.

“I got well angry,” the forward reveals, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the usual talk. I have no idea how true it was, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At Lezama, the city, the day’s first practice is set to begin; following that, the short journey to the airport and another trip to Britain, this time to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It has become a challenging campaign for Athletic, partly because of the pressures of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in the continental stage. Yet, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.

In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a final four contender in Europe, prevented from reaching a final at home by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway surrounded by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in 40 years. Now he is the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are distinctive and debuting in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.

Guruzeta thought it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. The son of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the Arsenal manager, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he went through a ACL injury, the cut, a demotion and a recall before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to live the best days of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the UCL.

“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the top level but with every stage you advance through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his debut and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and I suffered the ACL injury.

“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as something positive because it shifted the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it helps. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then return home, as a youngster does. At the complex, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, correct it. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”

You also have to play. The striker moved upset in 2020, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. At Sabadell in that season, he got three strikes in 40 games. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone in your position, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Particularly after last year which, at times, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
