Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Earn Nostalgic Victory Over Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” echoed around the stadium as Forest supporters reveled in a further win against Malmö. A great deal has transpired since Francis's winning header secured the continental trophy in 1979, but Forest continue to treasure those memories. Equally, major changes have taken place in the five weeks since the manager took charge, with Forest looking refreshed and securing a comfortable win thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of advancing in the European competition.

Gaining Momentum with Third Straight Win

For Nottingham Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after finishing sixth in their home competition – marked a third straight win across every tournament and added to the positive energy gained from the previous week's stunning victory at Liverpool. While this fixture was a reminder of Forest’s European Cup success in spirit, the encounter itself was devoid of any significant tension or nerves.

It proved to be an event dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third competitive meeting between the sides since the showpiece event over four decades past.

Forest leaned into the heritage, honoring the legends of that era by giving them, along with their visiting counterparts, the red-carpet treatment. 13 members of the Swedish club’s squad from that time were also in attendance. The two clubs shared a meal together prior to the kick-off. Forest legends and their teammates were given a rousing welcome when they assembled on the field 15 minutes before kick-off, and a typically impressive tifo was shown in the home stand.

Remembering the Past

“May 30, 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left,” read one part of a giant banner, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the rest was unfurled as the players emerged from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it continued. Another brilliant display depicted Brian Clough observing events beside his right-hand man Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.

Control from the Outset

So, the hosts had soaked up those beautiful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was strong, as well. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an attempt off target inside the opening moments and built a two-goal advantage by the break. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.

It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who came to Forest aged eight, made the first dent in the visitors' defense led by their own academy product skipper, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford. The Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross cannon off a defender and into the path of Yates, who swept home right-footed from the edge of the penalty area to score his maiden strike since March.

Another Strike Seals Dominance

Yates was implicated in the team's second goal on the brink of the interval, too, his unmarked header parried by the goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo poised to tap in the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the playmaker given a seldom start and only his second outing since September, was the spark, chipping a delicious ball towards Yates at the far post.

Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was deflected wide off Malmö back Colin Rösler, the son of former Manchester City forward Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked Milenkovic had earlier had a powerful header smartly repelled by Ellborg, who returned in place of the former Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Opponent's Struggles

This was Malmö’s first match since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on 9 November, and they found it hard to match the home team's intensity. Forest extended the lead to three when the defender applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo headed back a set-piece. Yates had a shot stopped, but the Serbia defender Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.

The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from 30 yards. It was one of those nights. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton, implemented multiple alterations from the team that surprised the Reds at their ground last weekend, when they also scored three goals, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus midway through the final period.

Smooth Evening for the Team

It turned out to be a hiccup-free evening for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could withdraw the defender with the game already boxed off and subsequently introduced 19-year-old defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. He talked about the club legends providing “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop demonstrated they are able of producing of excitement, as well.
