Celebratory Displays along with a Cheer for Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Agreement Bringing Back Captives

The declaration regarding a deal expected to result in the release captives held in the Gaza Strip for more than 24 months has caused delight and relief across Israel.

An organization that has advocated for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza expressed ā€œprofound gratitudeā€ for what it termed a ā€œlandmark achievementā€.

The agreement—which still must be agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—will see the release of 20 living hostages as well as the remains of 28 deceased captives in return for 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from the Gaza region.

So far, 148 hostages have come back—most as part of previous ceasefire deals—51 sets of remains have been recovered and eight hostages have been rescued.

Jubilant Scenes in Hostages’ Square

Joyous gatherings have unfolded at Hostages Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled ahead of the deal being signed.

A crowd began clapping and dancing under American and Israeli banners—a female attendee displaying a placard that read: ā€œWe love Trump.ā€

ā€œThis is a wondrous day,ā€ she expressed.

A different person, Yael, aged 50, wept as she watched the people celebrating.

ā€œI am thrilled—it is such a comfort,ā€ she stated. ā€œWe need to see them come back home to their families.ā€

Relatives Rejoice Using Pyrotechnics

The mom and sibling of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker lit fireworks to mark the announcement that he would be homecoming.

ā€œThey’re coming back!... Matan is coming home!ā€ Einav Zangauker said as she held her daughter.

Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: ā€œMy child, you are coming home.ā€

The delight could be felt throughout the avenues in Tel Aviv after the announcement.

Released Captives Say Prayers and Raise Glasses

Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of gratitude, then cheering ā€œTo lifeā€, meaning ā€œfor lifeā€. She has advocated for the release of her friends, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.

Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: ā€œMy dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You’re coming home.ā€

Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was taken hostage in October 2023, and her body recovered from a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has participated with other hostage families in pushing for a deal which ensures the return of everyone still detained within Gaza.

ā€œI can’t quite believe this is real. We have waited for so long and now it’s here,ā€ he expressed.

He stated he felt ā€œshatteredā€ that Carmel would not be among those coming back home but was ā€œradiant with happinessā€ for the families of the captives who are at last coming back.

Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south along with his brother.

Guarded Hope from Relatives

Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she experienced like she was living ā€œa dream stateā€.

ā€œWe are immensely thankful to the President and all he has accomplished on our behalf. It seems like it might be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than ever,ā€ she commented.

But she cautioned that it was still too soon to rejoice.

ā€œUntil the last hostage is here, we won’t open the champagne. We will continue struggling... until the end,ā€ she said.

ā€œNumerous events can happen up to the final instant so this is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to thank everyone who was involved in the work and make sure this deal is finalized... We shall rejoice only when we have the last hostage safely home.ā€

Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was released from captivity in a ceasefire deal earlier in the year.
