Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the legacy and commitment that the family owners has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, including a significant array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.

Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
