Jimmy Kimmel Live! Halted Indefinitely Following Presenter's Political Commentator Remarks
The television network stated that the program will be taken off air without a return date after comments made by the host concerning the killing of the conservative speaker.
Broadcaster and Affiliate Actions
ABC issued a statement on Wednesday night, confirming that the show would be preempted indefinitely. An ABC spokesperson explained that preempting means another program will air in its usual spot.
This action was prompted by one of the largest broadcast groups declared it would also preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! on its network of channels. The media company pointed to strong disapproval over the host's comments related to the death of Charlie Kirk.
What Led to the Suspension
Amid a recent episode, the host commented that political supporters were attempting to leverage the death of the commentator, who was fatally shot earlier this month in Utah.
The suspect faces charges with homicide and may be subject to the capital punishment.
The late-night host also targeted the vice president for publicly pointing fingers at liberal groups for Kirk’s death absent support.
JD Vance had asserted that most political extremists in the US come from the progressive side, a statement the host challenged by referencing a analysis on political violence in the United States.
Regulatory and Industry Pressure
Ahead of the broadcast group's move, a top regulator had urged affiliates to cease broadcasting the show, warning that there was a risk of penalties or license revocation if they transmitted content that misrepresented facts.
Carr later praised the media group for making the move and emphasized that local stations have an obligation to act in the community's benefit.
Nexstar's broadcasting president called the statements as divisive and untimely amid a critical political moment.
The host has not yet issued a statement about the incident.
Providing a national stage across our markets is no longer acceptable now.
The show is off the air until further notice.
