Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial names under consideration to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's 10-match without a victory start to the Premier League season.
And both candidates - both of who have historic associations to the club - are among the names to be considered by the club leadership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton head coach - who played over a century of games for the club during his time as a player - is considered a leading contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the club board as they begin the search of hiring a new manager.
O'Neil is additionally emerging as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock choice given he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham player is out of work which means Wolves would not be required to pay any compensation.
